Before we left to go to Puerto Plata last week, Renzo and I spent a day transplanting some of the plants we foraged in Amaceyes, as well as many of the plants we started from seed ourselves. We took advantage of a nice sunny day (after several days of rain) to get our plants in the ground. I did the work on the raised beds, Renzo did the plantings that needed less sun elsewhere on the land, and Taty was in charge of watering. We all got into the “zone” doing our jobs, and oddly enough I found myself feeling the same way I do when I’m sailing. I think it has something to do with the bliss of soaking in the afternoon sun, the way the quiet sounds of nature take center stage while the sounds of the city fade away, and the primal satisfaction of working in tandem with nature’s elements.
Here are some pics:
We didn’t have art class in La Vereda last week because we were in Puerto Plata, and class was cancelled this week due to a national holiday in honor of the Virgin Mary called “Dia de Nuestra Senora de Altagracia”. All the kids and parents went to church and then the parade. It’s just as well since we needed a little more time to gather plenty of wood for next week to make wood sculptures. In addition and we have commissioned a family friend named Marcialle to build us a simple wooden table for our class since the kids are cramped and we are running out of places to squish new students in! After looking for plastic tables at the hardware store and finding even the flimsiest ones were at least 40 dollars, we decided to see what Marcialle could do for the same price. Turns out he’s planning to build us a table that is larger than the one we have now out of plywood so we are very excited!
More to come soon!
